General:
Perennial herb from a stout, woody taproot and short, thick, usually partially subterranean stem-base, forming thick mats up to 30 cm wide; stems prostrate to ascending, simple, several, 5-20 cm tall/long, white-woolly.
Leaves:
Basal leaves linear to oblanceolate, usually white- or greyish-hairy beneath, grey to greenish above, the blades 3-7 cm long, the stalks up to 2 cm long; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a simple umbel, subtended by 4-6 usually leaflike, sometimes reduced, bracts; flower stalks naked; involucres narrowly bell-shaped, hairy, 3-8 mm long, squared off at the tip or with 4-5 shallow, erect to slightly spreading lobes; perianths yellowish or rose-tinged with long, stalk-like bases, soft-hairy throughout, 3-6 mm long, deeply 6-lobed.
Fruits:
Achenes, 3-angled, slightly hairy above the middle, about 4 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Dry grasslands, shrublands, rock outcrops and scree slopes from the steppe to alpine zones; locally infrequent in SE BC; E to AB and S to ID, MT and OR; disjunct in S YT.
